Happy Lunar New Year!

February 7th, 2010

The first day of the Lunar New Year is the most celebrated holiday of the year for Asian-Americans. This is indisputably the festival which epitomizes the identity of Vietnamese culture. To celebrate this event, the Vietnamese Spring Festival and Parade is held in downtown San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley. It is also home to one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in America. The event draws an estimated attendance of more than 60,000 people. With expanded marketing and media as well as television coverage, the attendance is expected to grow at a faster pace each year.

Founded in 1998, the Vietnamese Spring Parade has expanded from less than 40 entries to over 100 entries in 2007 to include decorated floats, dragon and lion dancers, multiple marching bands, famous entertainers, cultural groups, non-profit organizations, students from schools and universities throughout the Bay Area, local businesses and corporate sponsors. The parade’s theme emphasizes ethnic diversity and Vietnamese culture. This colorful parade has become the premiere cultural event in the Vietnamese-American Community.

The Vietnamese Spring Festival holds a special significance for the neighborhood featuring a wide variety of exhibitions and entertainment which gives the Bay Area residents an opportunity to experience enjoy the culture and foods from different countries. The event features arts and crafts, live music, cultural performances, martial arts, children’s games along with Vietnamese food and drinks. No alcohol will be served and admission to this event is free.

The blooming of cherry trees in downtown San Jose announces the arrival of spring. Spring festivities reflect ordinary life that has been transformed to a higher plane in performance. The Vietnamese Spring Festival and Parade showcases the Vietnamese heritage and promotes the cultural diversity in the community.
